Ban Toxic Synthetic Food Color Additives and HFCS
Tell your U.S. Representatives to pass both the Do or Dye Act (H.R.8687) and the Stop Spoonfuls of Fake Sugar Act (H.R.8688), sponsored by Representative Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13).
The Do or Dye Act would treat synthetic food color additives, also called food dyes, as adulterants under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and includes Blue Nos. 1 and 2, Green No. 3, Red Nos. 3 and 40, Yellow Nos. 5 and 6.
Synthetic food colors can pose a greater risk for children and the evidence is mounting. Studies have increasingly linked these food additives to neurobehavioral impacts such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a determination in 1990 that Red No. 3 could cause cancer, yet the agency has refused to ban it.
In October 2023, California became the first state to ban Red No. 3. But consider this: Red No. 3 has been banned in the EU since 1994. It’s also banned in Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Why is the U.S. so far behind in protecting the health of its citizens?
The Stop Spoonfuls of Fake Sugar Act would treat high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as an adulterant under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
HFCS, made from genetically engineered corn, has been linked to high blood pressure, insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
“Fructose goes straight to your liver and starts a fat production factory,” says Dr. Mark Hyman, Founder and Senior Advisor for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. “It triggers the production of triglycerides and cholesterol.” He explains that it’s actually the sugar — not the fat — that causes the most cholesterol trouble. What’s even worse, Dr. Hyman notes, is high doses of fructose “punch little holes in your intestinal lining, causing what we call a leaky gut.” He explains that this allows foreign food proteins and bacterial proteins to enter into your bloodstream, which triggers inflammation, makes you gain weight and causes Type 2 diabetes.
“It is time that we stop allowing unaccountable corporations and the complicit Food and Drug Administration to poison our families. Far too many Americans are suffering needlessly from type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and mental health conditions as a result of artificial and harmful ingredients that are in nearly every refrigerator and pantry in our country,” said Congresswoman Luna. “Not only are we consuming spoonfuls of high-fructose corn syrup every day, but many of the foods and snacks we consume have dyes linked to an alarming number of health conditions.”
Toxic synthetic food color additives and HFCS need to be banned and removed from our food supply. Tell your U.S. Representatives to pass the Do or Dye Act and the Stop Spoonfuls of Fake Sugar Act today.
