The EPA Must Ban Glyphosate, an Unacceptable Risk to Endangered Species and All Living Things
A 2016 lawsuit forced the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to evaluate the dangers glyphosate poses to species listed under the Endangered Species Act. In November 2020, the EPA finally published their Draft Endangered Species Act Biological Evaluations.
The EPA’s own evaluation found:
-
Glyphosate is likely to injure or kill 93% of the plants and animals protected under the Endangered Species Act.
-
1,676 endangered species are likely to be harmed by glyphosate.
-
Glyphosate adversely modifies critical habitat for 759 endangered species.
-
280 million pounds of glyphosate are used just in agriculture, sprayed on 298 million acres of cropland annually.
-
84% of glyphosate used in agriculture is applied to GMO soy, corn and cotton.
-
Glyphosate is widely used in non-GMO fruit and vegetable production.
-
Glyphosate is also used on lawns, gardens, landscaping, roadsides, schoolyards, national forests, rangelands, power lines and more.
Let’s be clear. Many peer-reviewed studies identify glyphosate as the cause of certain species declines. Glyphosate overuse has likely pushed many species into Endangered Species status in the first place.
Numerous peer-reviewed studies link glyphosate and glyphosate-containing products like Bayer-Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller to a laundry list of human health harms. This new Draft Endangered Species Act Biological Evaluation by the EPA adds to evidence showing that glyphosate poses an unacceptable risk to endangered species and all living things.
Tell the EPA that a ban on glyphosate is long overdue!
