WE DID IT!
Governor Newsom signed AB-2316, the California School Food Safety Act, into law. The new law will ban toxic synthetic food dyes in school meals in California.
Specifically, AB-2316 will prohibit a school district, county superintendent of schools, or charter school maintaining kindergarten or any of grades 1 to 12 from serving or selling food or beverages made with any of these toxins: Blue Nos. 1 and 2, Green No. 3, Red No. 40, Yellow Nos. 5 and 6.
A keen-eyed supporter contacted us when taking action on our click-and-send that was sent out to California residents some weeks ago. She was worried that her email wasn’t sent to the governor’s office. We looked into it and, sure enough, we discovered that Governor Newsom’s website was preventing automated emails from being received. Why? We’re not sure.
But the signatures from our great supporters in California did not go to waste. We printed out all of the signatures and mailed them to Governor Newsom's office. The governor received the petition and signatures last Tuesday.

Now, parents of California school kids will have one less thing to worry about in their lunches. And as the saying goes, "As California goes, so goes the nation." We'll be continuing our advocacy work on this issue.
Keep your eyes peeled. We have a national action coming soon to remove toxic food dyes in school lunches across the nation. Every kid deserves to not be poisoned by toxic synthetic food dyes.
