U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: No GMOs and Synthetic Pesticides in the National Wildlife Refuge System!
While we focus on the pandemic, the government has been busy working for Bayer-Monsanto and the GMO/agrichemical lobby. In a brazenly reckless move to push through another damaging rollback of environmental protections, the FWS has announced plans to once again allow GMO crops to be grown on 44,000 acres of farmland within the Southeastern Region of the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS). GMO crops have been banned in wildlife refuges since July, 2014.
GMO crops and the wave of heavy pesticide use that comes with them will threaten dozens of endangered species that the wildlife refuges were created to protect. “It’s a no-brainer that this kind of pesticide-intensive agriculture shouldn’t be allowed on public lands that are critical to wildlife conservation and preservation of the unique ecosystems of the southeastern U.S,” said Hannah Connor, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, in a statement.
There will be no Federal Register docket to provide transparent access to comments so there will be no way to measure the level of public outcry. This is outrageous. During this time when our federal government is whittling away our right to transparency, don’t let your voice be suppressed and silenced. Email your comment to the FWS now, before April 19th, before they announce this is a done deal. Click and send the prewritten email. We encourage you to take the time to edit or write your own if you can.
