Tell Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney to sign the Healthy Outdoor Public Spaces Bill 200425-A to Ban Synthetic Pesticides in Parks, Trails, Playgrounds and Public Spaces.

Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed the Healthy Outdoor Public Spaces Bill. The bill bans synthetic pesticides linked to health harm on all city-owned land. Eighteen months after it is signed into law, these toxic chemicals will be prohibited on all city property except golf courses and athletic fields, which have an extra 6 months to comply. The city must also develop an organic land management plan.

On Earth Day, 2021, New York City Council unanimously passed a similar bill, which will take effect at the end of June, 2021. If the largest city in America can do it, so can Philadelphia!

It is exciting to see that the bipartisan Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed Bill 200425-A -- the Healthy Outdoor Public Spaces Bill -- to eliminate the use of toxic synthetic pesticides on all city-owned land and protect public health. An unprecedented number of people of all ages are seeking exercise, recreation, and access to natural beauty in over 10,400 acres of city parks and public grounds. It is imperative that public spaces be free of toxic substances such as synthetic pesticides, which have been shown in scientific studies to cause disease and compromised immune systems. Children are especially vulnerable to these toxins. The Healthy Outdoor Public Spaces Bill has been sitting on your desk for months, awaiting your signature. What is the delay? Why do you refuse to protect Philly’s children? Last month, New York City passed a bill banning the use of all synthetic pesticides in public spaces. If the largest city in America can do it, Philadelphia can do it too. There are no excuses. City Council and your constituents have worked very hard to pass this bill. In support of public and environmental health, please sign the bill into law today!
