300 million baby male chicks are killed every year in the U.S., either by being gassed or dropped alive and awake into a high-speed grinder called a macerator. The macerator technique is the common method of killing in the U.S. Israeli scientists have now filed a patent on GMO mother hens that kill their own male chicks before they hatch out of the eggs, and touting this as an "animal welfare" solution. The GMO short-haired cow was created using a risky and imprecise genetic engineering technology called CRISPR. Studies show that CRISPR can cause off-target and unpredictable effects on the organism.
