RFKJ Slams Ultraprocessed Foods, Toxic Pesticides and Chemicals as Harmful to Kids in Sweeping MAHA Report
Exposures to pesticides and other chemicals, ultraprocessed foods and the over-prescription of medications are among the factors contributing to an epidemic of chronic disease in America’s children, according to the MAHA Commission Report published on Thursday. The 68-page report calls for a "transformation" of U.S. food, health and "scientific systems" as a means to address what the report calls the "sickest generation in American history in terms of chronic disease." The report blames complacency in scientific and medical institutions, corrupted federal and state policies guided "more by corporate profit than the public interest," and U.S. food and agricultural systems that have "embraced ultra-processed ingredients and synthetic chemicals." The report calls out corporate influence over research, regulators and lawmakers as factors contributing to the problems. In a call with reporters, Kennedy said the commission will work over the next 80 days to issue policy recommendations for the White House based on the report's findings. "This report is really… a diagnosis. The prescription comes in 100 days,” he said.
This is a great start. It's refreshing to read an official government document outlining almost everything that our movement has been campaigning on for decades. But make no mistake, it won't be easy. While RFKJ is hammering out the "prescription" over the next 100 days, he will be up against industry lobbyists attempting to derail any real progress or change. And directors at other agencies, like EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, will be doing the opposite of what the MAHA Report calls for. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp Signs Monsanto Protection Act Into Law
Gov Kemp has thrown Georgia residents under the bus by signing SB144, a bill shielding Bayer-Monsanto and all pesticide corporations from legal accountability when their products cause cancer, Parkinson’s disease and other health harms. As politicians always do when they're passing tremendously unpopular laws, Kemp signed the bill under the cover of darkness... on the Friday right before a busy Mother's Day weekend when no one was paying attention. Georgia becomes the second state to pass a Monsanto Protection Act after North Dakota's Gov Kelly Armstrong signed the same bill for his state at the end of April. This also comes on the heels of a $2.1 billion Georgia jury verdict against Bayer in a Roundup weedkiller/cancer trial that ended in April. We need to get the chemical industry's corrupt politicians out of all levels of government or America will keep getting sicker and sicker.
EPA Scraps Drinking Water Limits on 4 Toxic PFAS Chemicals and Defunds Research into PFAS Contamination on Farms
While farm state governors are busy protecting Bayer-Monsanto, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is busy protecting the chemical industry and poison pushers at the federal level. An EPA press release said the agency intends to rescind limits set under the Biden EPA in April 2024 on 4 types of harmful PFAS chemicals widely found in drinking water – PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and GenX. The EPA will keep the limits of 4 parts per trillion in drinking water for 2 other types of PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, the agency said. But, in another move drawing criticism from health advocates, the agency said it will delay the deadline for drinking water systems to comply by 2 years, from 2029 to 2031.
Also this month, the EPA canceled multiple grants to university research teams and other projects studying how PFAS “forever chemicals” contaminate soil and groundwater, andlooking at how PFAS accumulates in and impacts food crops, including at least $3 million for 2 projects specifically looking at contamination on farms.
How is any of this Making America Healthy Again? These actions by EPA Administrator Zeldin directly contradict the MAHA Commission Report. Zeldin is part of the problem and must be held accountable. Stay tuned!

Autism and Chemicals
Autism spectrum disorder is now diagnosed in about 1 in 31 children in the U.S., a rise of 70% in just 4 years according to the CDC. In addition to better awareness and changing diagnostic tools, growing scientific evidence also points to the role of exposure to toxic chemicals especially during early development in the rising prevalence of autism. Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician, researcher, professor at Boston College, and one of the world’s leading experts on toxic exposure from plastics and pollution discusses with Living on Earth Host Steve Curwood. "...the most worrisome exposures, the most dangerous exposures, are the ones that occur during the 9 months of pregnancy, when a child's brain is still growing and developing, which is an incredibly rapid, complex and therefore easily disrupted process. And exposure can occur via various routes. If toxic chemicals such as insecticide or phthalates get into a mother, those chemicals can cross the placenta from the mother to the baby and get into the baby's brain and cause damage. And then, after the child is born, the child can become exposed to these chemicals through their food, their drinking water, through playing on the rug, hand-to-mouth behavior, and even through inhaling the chemicals, if they're volatile in the home environment," said Dr. Landrigan.
Ziploc Is Facing A New Lawsuit Related To Potential Microplastic Exposure
Ziploc bags and containers have been such a presence in Americans' lives for decades that most people don’t even think twice about using them. But a new class action lawsuit is raising a lot of questions about the safety of this food storage staple. The lawsuit, which was filed by California resident Linda Cheslow, alleges that Ziploc bags and containers contain undisclosed microplastics that can harm consumers, and that marketing them as "microwave safe" and suitable for "freezer" use is misleading, since they're made from "materials that scientific and medical evidence shows release microplastics when microwaved and frozen." Jamie Alan, PhD, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, says that it would be "logical to believe that all plastic products come with some level of personal and environmental risk." Scientists are still trying to parse the potential impact of microplastics on health but there is some research linking these particles to dementia and heart disease. Microplastics have also been linked to oxidative stress. Long-term oxidative stress has been tied to the development of chronic inflammation, cancer, and other diseases.
