RED ALERT Tell North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong: VETO HB1318 This is an action for North Dakota residents only. If you're not a North Dakota resident, you can still help if you have family or friends in the state. Please share this action widely. We need to get the word out quickly. In rapid succession last week, Republican majorities in North Dakota’s State Senate and House passed HB1318, the Monsanto Protection Act on Steroids, giving Bayer-Monsanto immunity from cancer lawsuits. In fact, it shields the entire pesticide industry from lawsuits when their products cause harm. With HB1318 clearing both chambers, the bill is now on Governor Kelly Armstrong’s desk. There is no time to waste. North Dakota residents must speak up today.
We encourage all North Dakota residents to also call Governor Armstrong's office after you send an email. Phone calls make a big difference. You can keep it simple and say, "I demand that Governor Armstrong veto HB1318. This issue is important to me." Office of Governor Kelly Armstrong: Phone 701.328.2200
View the North Dakota Senate roll call votes HERE. View the North Dakota House roll call votes HERE. What’s happened most recently? Last month, a Monsanto Protection Act bill passed both legislatures in Georgia in the same week that a Georgia jury ordered Bayer-Monsanto to pay $2.1 billion to a plaintiff who developed cancer from his use of Roundup herbicide. We’ve been advocating for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to veto bill SB144. As of this writing, Gov Kemp has not signed SB144 and we’re following closely. We had some temporary success in the states of Iowa and Tennessee. While Iowa Senate Republicans passed SB394, the Iowa House declined to hear the bill this session. “I think at this point in time, there’s not support within the caucus for that bill,” said Iowa Representative Pat Grassley. Recent polling from the Iowa Association for Justice found that 89% of Iowa voters oppose pesticide immunity legislation, including 87% of Republican respondents. Similarly, Tennessee Senate Republicans passed their Monsanto Protection Act despite public opposition. But Tennessee House members decided to postpone hearing bill HB0809 until 2026. Because the IA and TN State House bills were not voted down, the effort to shield pesticide manufacturers from accountability will continue to rear its ugly head until the politicians working for Bayer and the agrichemical industry are voted out. “At the end of the day, multinational chemical companies like Bayer should be held accountable,” said Nick Schutt, a farmer whose mother, father, aunt and two siblings have all had cancer diagnoses and who opposes the pesticide immunity bill in his state of Iowa. Bayer-Monsanto has known for MANY DECADES that Roundup causes cancer. It’s time for accountability, not immunity! Bayer must be stopped. North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has a choice. He can either take away North Dakota residents’ right to sue pesticide companies when they suffer harm, or he can do what’s right: veto HB1318 to protect his constituents.
