Sewage sludge is exactly what it sounds like. The EPA calls the stuff "biosolids" and allows this toxic product of wastewater treatment to be applied to conventional farmland and forests as fertilizer. And USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack just appointed Sally Brown, a sewage sludge lobbyist, to a seat on the newly created USDA Urban Agriculture Advisory Committee. So if we don't speak up, sewage sludge is coming to community gardens, too.

Sally Brown, Research Associate Professor at the University of Washington, is a "university representative" for a sewage sludge advocacy organization called Northwest Biosolids (NWB). NWB promotes the use of toxic municipal sewage sludge as fertilizer for crops and forests despite the fact that toxins, including PFAS forever chemicals, are being increasingly found in biosolids.

Sewage Sludge Sally is a lobbyist for the toxic biosolids industry and does not belong on the Urban Agriculture Committee, nor should this toxic stuff be used as fertilizer for the food that we eat.
Communities in states around the country have been devastated by these so-called "fertilizer" applications because they are increasingly being found to contain toxic PFAS forever chemicals and other toxins. Sewage sludge has severely damaged conventional farmland and has even caused farmers to lose their farms.

Sewage sludge is prohibited for use on certified organic farms. But since PFAS forever chemicals do not break down in the environment, certified organic farms that were once conventionally farmed have been shown to be contaminated years later. Using sewage sludge as fertilizer has resulted in "dangerous levels" of toxic PFAS being found in the food we eat, including beef, milk, eggs, vegetable crops around the country.
The American public and farmers need to be made aware of the dangers of using biosolids as fertilizer. We also need to stop the USDA and the EPA from promoting biosolids as a cheap fertilizer option for conventional farmers. Many do not know because the EPA is dishonest about the safety of these products.

We’ve made it quick and easy for you to email the Urban Agriculture Advisory Committee and the EPA to demand change. It only takes a minute to make your voice heard.

Sewage sludge is not fertilizer! You can help by taking action today. Spread the information, not the sewage sludge.
